Stop WhatsApp photos saving to your gallery on Android

To stop WhatsApp photos saving to your gallery on Android, open WhatsApp and turn off Media visibility. WhatsApp says it is on by default, and that it is what saves received photos, videos and audio to your phone. It does not remove anything already saved, and it is not the same as stopping downloads.

Turn off Media visibility for all chats

Tap the three dots, then Settings > Chats, and switch off Media visibility. From then on, new media from every chat stays out of the gallery. (WhatsApp: stop saving media to your phone)

Menu names change between app versions. WhatsApp’s older help pages call a similar switch Show media in gallery. If you see that label instead, it is the one to use. The help pages do not say whether the two are the same setting in every version, so check the Chats screen on your own phone.

Turn it off for one chat

If you only want to stop a few chats, open the chat, tap the contact or group name (Contact info or Group info), choose Media visibility, and pick No. This suits a group that sends hundreds of memes while you still want photos from family to land in the gallery.

WhatsApp notes that changing the global setting does not undo choices you already made for specific chats or groups. If a chat still saves photos, check its own setting.

Limit what downloads automatically

Media visibility decides whether files show in the gallery. Auto-download decides whether WhatsApp fetches them at all. On Android, open Settings > Storage and data (older versions put it under Data usage). The Media auto-download section has three separate groups: mobile data, Wi-Fi and roaming. In each, you choose which types download on their own: photos, audio, video, documents. (WhatsApp: configure auto-download)

WhatsApp says images download over mobile data by default. Untick everything and you tap a photo to download it. That saves data, but a photo you tap still has to be handled by the visibility setting above.

The files do not disappear

Turning visibility off hides media from the gallery. It does not stop WhatsApp keeping its own copy. WhatsApp’s help pages say media is saved in a WhatsApp media folder on the phone, and that adding a .nomedia file to the Images folder hides those photos from the gallery, with removing it bringing them back. (WhatsApp: auto-download) So hidden from the gallery is not the same as gone. A file manager or another app with storage access can still see the folder.

WhatsApp’s help page does not say that turning the setting off removes media already saved. Assume it does not. To clear old photos, delete them in your gallery or file manager. Deleting a saved copy removes the file from your phone, so keep anything you want first.

Photos sent as view once (WhatsApp: view once) cannot be saved to the recipient’s gallery, which is a cleaner option when you are the one sending something sensitive.

Samsung fallback: hide the album

If the setting does not work on your phone, or you want the existing photos out of sight, hide the album. In Gallery > Albums, tap View all, then the three dots, Hide albums, and switch on the WhatsApp Images album. Samsung’s page describes it as removing the album from the Gallery view. (Samsung: hide and unhide albums) There is no lock. The files stay where they are, and My Files or another gallery app still shows them. More on the options in how to hide photos on Samsung.

Photos you want to keep private

Some WhatsApp photos are worth keeping, just not in a shared folder. Copy those into a vault app and delete the originals. VaultIt encrypts photos on the device with AES-256-GCM, using a key from a drawn pattern, with a 12-word recovery phrase, no account and no ads. Uninstalling it or clearing its data deletes the vault, so keep an encrypted backup off the phone. For the wider picture, see where hidden photos on Android actually go.
